About
Kenneth Offricht · Creator of EssaySecrets™
I’ve spent 3,500+ hours one-on-one with students learning how college essays actually work — and how applications that get into Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford, and beyond are built. EssaySecrets™ is that system.
The short version
Most students don’t have a writing problem. They have a thinking problem. They’ve been told to “be authentic,” “show passion,” “tell a story” — and they’ve been given approximately zero structure for how to do any of that strategically. The result is essays that sound exactly like every other applicant’s essay, even when the writer is genuinely interesting.
My work is to reverse that. To give students a framework precise enough that the writing becomes secondary — because once the thinking is clear, the words follow.

How I got here
I trained as a writer (MFA, Creative Writing) and an educator (Ed.M., Harvard). The combination is rarer than it should be in college admissions. Most coaches are former admissions officers who know what the gate looks like from the inside, or former teachers who know how to give feedback. Few have spent serious time studying narrative and studying how learners actually learn.
I started working one-on-one with students who needed help with college essays. The same patterns showed up over and over: smart kids with real stories, unable to put them on paper in a way that revealed who they actually were. After thousands of sessions, I noticed something different from what coaching guides taught: the essay is not the assignment. The essay is the output of a thinking process the student has never been guided through. Fix the thinking process and the essays write themselves.
That observation became the EssaySecrets™ system. Same framework, every student, regardless of background, achievements, or starting point.
Why the essay matters more than you’ve been told
At competitive schools, grades and scores stop being the decisive factor at the top of the applicant pool. Once you’re past the academic threshold — and most applicants to selective schools are — admissions officers are looking for something else: who you are, how you think, and what kind of student you’ll be on their campus.
The essay is the only place in the application where you control the answer. Test scores are what they are. Activities are what they are. Recommendations are what others say about you. The essay is the one chance to be the author of your own story — and it weighs more than students realize for exactly that reason.
How I work with students
The work happens in three layers:
EssaySecrets™ is the strategic framework — the system, the vocabulary, the do’s and don’ts, and the foundational exercise (Literary Clay) that identifies your raw material. It’s the same coaching system distilled into a course every student can access. More about EssaySecrets™.
The guides on this site break down specific questions in detail — from the Common App personal statement to supplementals, AI in essays, and overall application strategy.
The direct work — reading your specific material, identifying what’s missing, and helping you build the essay only you could have written — happens for students who choose to go further after completing Literary Clay inside EssaySecrets™.
What students and parents say
What I believe about this work
Admissions feels random from the outside. Inside, it has a logic — admissions officers are trying to build a class, not pick winners. Every application is a piece of evidence in a decision an actual person is going to make in the next eight to ten minutes after picking it up.
That means every essay has one job: make it easy for that person to say yes. Not by being impressive. Not by being clever. By being specific, coherent, and unmistakably you.
That’s the work. That’s all of it.
