What a college admissions essay actually has to do

Most essays fall flat for the same reason: no one explains the job. It isn’t a diary or a highlight reel. Its one job is to make an admissions officer, buried in a thousand files, stop and think I want this kid here. That changes how you write it:

  • Find your voice by not giving it away — write it the way you (or your teen) actually talk(s).
  • Write the opening last — build the essay first, then the first line, once you know what it’s opening into.
  • Earn the next sentence — one hook that makes stopping feel impossible.
  • Say less, mean more — the strongest personal statements are shorter than you think.

That’s the difference between an essay that’s fine and one that sounds unmistakably like your teen.

“He works hard to keep my messages sounding original while also addressing what admission officers want.”

— Hong Z., Studio City, CA

“Uses a very straightforward and effective teaching style to clearly point out what kind of message my essay sends.”

— Qing F., Simsbury, CT

“He knew what parts to cut, what to highlight, and how to end in a striking way.”

— Joey

From blank page to “I’m actually proud of this”

Picture the week before deadlines feeling different. The essay’s done. It sounds authentic. And instead of did we do enough? — something quieter: “I’ve done everything I needed to do. I left nothing on the table” before hitting submit.

“My daughter had been working with a coach much of the summer, but after one lesson with Kenneth, she said she learned way more with him. He was caring, engaged, and committed to helping her find her voice and feel proud of her work.”

— Isabel F., Odessa, FL

“He gave my daughter confidence in her story and writing ability. She is proud of what she created. He really brought the best out of her.”

— Shanay W., Bowie, MD
